A lively and enjoyable celebration is taking place during Read Across America Week at the Milltown Primary School.
Milltown dresses up and opens the books to honor this Read Across America Week, March 2-6.
The week of reading and celebrating is spearheaded by Gina Cocivera-Wright, Milltown’s dedicated and passionate School Library Media Specialist.
Ms. Cocivera-Wright happily explained the program.
“Milltown Primary School combines One Book One School timing with Read Across America. We always celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday for an entire week. It is also the week of our book fair.”
Milltown’s One Book One School for the month of March is titled “The Cricket in Times Square.”
Ms. Cocivera-Wright further explained this lively week.
“Children have daily read-alouds and dress-up days. On Wednesday night (March 4), families return to hear teachers and Principal Dr. Matt Lembo read stories, and to visit the book fair. They participate in a Reading Train to end the week.”
Why “The Cricket in Times Square?”
“Our book is chosen after voting with brackets in the prior spring by the staff. We do this so there is time to make connections to the curriculum and decisions about decorating by grade level,” Ms. Cocivera-Wright revealed.
“The One Book One School kicks off after the decorating has taken place. Students wonder what the book will be and lots of them try guessing. There is an entire Team Read Across America at our school that helps with all the preparations and decorations. This planning and doing takes months and is worth every moment when we see the students' faces light up,” she said.
Ms. Cocivera-Wright continued her glowing report on this enjoyable period.
“ From this point until spring break, students will all be enjoying The Cricket in Times Square being read in classrooms, classrooms that have live crickets as a part of the experience this year. Between Read Across America and One Book One School, Milltown is sharing the joys of reading as we celebrate literacy! “
